yeah thanks for all that info that I already knew about, I can come up with ideas for workarounds all day. actually most of what you suggest is either already in place or useless: I already use simple cylinders for collision, I can’t break down the landscape, and the rest of your ideas that rely on ‘stuff around the player’ would not work on a multiplayer game.
the fact of the matter is that I’m not really looking at a techdemo. I’m using an engine with their advertised “Open World Tools” and “Foliage Tools” and yet I can’t use them together without tricks and gimmicks.
every game company that made an open-world game designed and built their engine to deal with these issues, and I’m using an engine that supposedly offers this. yet it doesn’t.
