Post process materials Vs Post process volumes

Hello everyone,

I’m been going through the “All UE4 Tutorials” playlist on youtube and have become interested in post processing.
Since the tutorial that covers post process materials is brief, I’m a little confused as to how and when to use each post process option.

Are there any post process dedicated video tutorials or is the UE4 documentation the only reference?

I basically would like to know when is it appropriate to use materials over volumes and visa versa?

What is the impact on processing for each?

I’m looking to use a post process to alter the look of the entire screen, but have a user be able to turn it on and off at will. A good example would be switching to night vision and back during game play.

I’d like to push the changes made to the screen to be more extreme compared to a night vision look, so I think that a post process volume might be the way to go as I expect it to be an expensive process.

Any thoughts on when and why to use one process over the other?

Cheers,

Hey there ,
Not too sure if this is what you are looking for BUT maybe it can get you going in the right direction or spark some ideas.

That demo is an example of how to use a post processing material to change the appearance of the user’s screen.

Thank you !

Thats a great place for me to get started.

Exactly what we were looking for as well; thanks a bunch!
