Optimizing Metahumans

Has anyone successfully rendered a small animated metahuman crowd of say 10-20 people and overcome the performance bottlenecks to get real-time playback (24fps+). This is for virtual production.
If successful what was your optimization approach?
Any tips or suggestions appreciated!

Before I say anything, which quality of MetaHuman have you downloaded? They’re not all the same:

Yes I am aware of that. I believe there is also a City Sample crowds pack in the Marketplace which are somewhat simplified Metahumans.

But even then I am 100% sure a LOT of optimization must take place.
Not sure where to start.
Would appreciate any tips!

I am hoping to avoid converting to VATs!

I believe some people have round tripped thru Blender to do a poly reduction but haven’t found any detailed tutorial on this. I’m no Blender guru!

Okay, again, I have no idea what you’ve done to this point, so to avoid being redundant, what steps have you already taken?

Hi, you can do the following things to further optimize the low version.

  • Resize all larger textures to 1K
  • Disable in the groom settings LOD 0 & 1

Then you can use a spawn system, to spawn / despawn NPCs depending on the player position
