Normal map baked asset importing with weird shadow artifacts!

Hello everyone!

So I have this weapon a friend and I have been working on. We have a high poly and a low poly, and baked out the detail into a normal map. This is what it looks like in Blender:

It looks acceptable, right?

Problem is, when I import it into Unreal 4, I get a problem:


Look at it! It’s… Gross!

Now my first thought was to harden the edges and re-export, as I didn’t bother to do that as the normal map took care of it for me, but better safe than sorry, right?


Honestly, now it looks even worse!

I toyed with blender’s export settings, messing with all the smoothing group options and mixing those with and without edges, deleting all my modifiers. I tried every combination. No dice.

What is going on here? How do I fix this? :0

You have to flip your green channel -> double click onto the normal map - in the properties you have to enable “flip green channel” :slight_smile:
