i’d speculate here and guess you doing the transform in software will insert 300 meshes at the top level of the bvh every frame. once inserted and given all the data is on the gpu it’s just computing it locally. i reckon the addition and removal of top level bvh is “expensive”.

either way… @Krzysztof.N knows that probably better and has more actual facts. yep. : )
