Mike here. I’m looking at re-building my PC for a UE4 project i have had to put on hold because of the limitations due to my PC Specs. I have looked for Recommended Specs for UE4 but it didn’t seem to be up to date. I am looking at the following. Please let me know if it’s worth it or if i should chose different hardware etc.
Intel i7 8700k
32 GB DDR4 Ram
M.2 1TB Drive
*1070Ti (I have this installed already)
*Liquid cooling kit
would this be the best setup for my PC so i can go and use UE4 more efficiently ?
It depends on how much money you have to spend, but I’d consider the Socket 2066 motherboard/processors, since you’ll be able to upgrade that later. Something like the 7820X is pretty great.
I’d cut the 1TB drive to a 512GB, you don’t need a 1TB SSD, instead I’d get a disk drive as a secondary drive for storage.
I wouldn’t worry about a liquid cooling system, it’s not going to be useful unless you’re going to tinker with the settings of your computer a lot to overclock things.
i currently have the 7600k and i’m happy with that so far for gaming. my pc is for more then one type of use. "Gaming Building/Gaming & Streaming for Twitch and other applications as well that i run in the background 24/7. I need the HDD space for games etc also on steam i have over 200 Games and i can’t get them all on my current 240GB SSD for obvious reasons. so the M.2 is essential for me especially for Escape form tarkov which runs like ■■■■ on my PC so other then gaming and Game building i don’t really have an option for HDD Speed. but thanks for the suggestions.
You don’t need to install 200 games, but I highly recommend against a 1TB drive since the price is so high, also if you are looking at the Samsung 960 the EVO is almost as good as the PRO but it’s a pretty good amount cheaper.
I agree with DarthViper107 on everything. You will get most mileage from a 250GB to 512GB SSD and another 1 or 2T HDD since not every game benefits from an SSD. The 960 EVO is a very solid choice. Your current build should actually be doing fine with most games and UE4. I’m running a GTX 1080 that has to output to a 34401440 screen, but paired with a old 4770K and there hasn’t been a game so far that I could not run. Most of them on ultra settings. Except for poorly optimized games like ARK: Survival evolved and PUBG for example. Maybe my hyper threading does help with build times even though it’s 3 gens older I don’t know, but I haven’t experienced any problems running UE4 or doing heavy load work in any of my other programs. Ranging from music sampling to 3d modeling and visual studio. My own opinion on watercooling is you should get it if you have either a lot of money to spend and want it to look cool, need a pc that’s perfectly silent (for like in an recording studio) or you want to go into absurd Over Clocking. In my pc everything is air-cooled and I don’t hear it from under my table. Using a good fan on a cheap Coolermaster CPU cooler, metal/aluminum casing. And with an OC of 4.6ghz (3.5ghz stock) idle temps are 23 celcius on the mobo and 29* on the CPU. On full load the CPU won’t go over 70*. So air cooling is viable. When I’m away from home I’m working on my laptop and that has lower specs than your current pc. It’s still able to pull everything, albeit with a little bit longer build times, I throw at it! So if you have any performance problems with your current build it might be some driver issues, any framework or libraries that are not installed correctly?
For the CPU aspect. i need the water cooling because it’s much quiter and i have a YouTube channel I run on a weekly basis so my AT2020USB mic picks up anything around me in my Studio. which i live in a 1 bedroom Condo plus Den so the den is my PC room. very small room but it’s got bad echo so i had to put up Acoustic sound foam all around the room. My Current SSD is going to die soon. and i have 200+ games on steam. i play around 200 hours of steam games a month on avg. I do run video editing software in the background while i’m gaming so it does kind of take some of the performance away from when i’m gaming. i do need a 1TB because i also do Photo shoots on the side as a hobby so i render 4k Pictures as well. so i need the drive space for all around storage and also i play a game as i mentioned above called “Escape from Tarkov” which they recommend a M.2 or High End SSD because the game is poorly optimized all around. But thank you for your reply as well Adapt. Much thanks for your opinion.
If you do photography/video editing it’s much better to store that stuff on a regular disk HD where it’s much cheaper, it doesn’t need an SSD for that. You should be able to fit whatever games you’re currently playing on a 512GB SSD. If you have the money, do whatever you want but if you’re trying to save a bit, getting a 1TB SSD is a huge expense.
