I've arrived and to prove it, I'm here

Hello

I have begun my journey using Unreal engine and I would like to welcome myself to this inspiring community.
I am a self taught digital artist & photographer. I love creating scenes that I can no longer photograph because they simply do not exist anymore. My number one wish would be to have a time machine whereby I could travel back to 16th, 17th 18th century Britain and photograph the mean streets of a struggling society. Houses built by hand, industry forged by fire, sweat and blood.

I began creating photo manipulations pinching buildings, trees etc from photos that I had taken whilst out and about. However I want to create scenes from scratch and have the freedom to add whatever I want to the scene. I can also set the mood, environment and atmosphere it’s all just mind blowing whats out there and available.

I do have one question - I have created a small map in Unreal I went for the smallest resolution in World Creator 512 x 512 after applying 2 textures, a base (rock) and some grass via a heatmap why do I have 27000 shaders?

It’s still loading my project whilst I write this, my project has taken nearly 40 mins to load and I have a powerful machine. Is this normal? Its a little worrying as its just a simple landscape I haven’t even begun putting in buildings, trees yet. Is there something that is switched on that is causing the shaders to rack up? possibly lighting effects etc.

My Setup
Processor Name: Intel(R) Core™ i7-6700K CPU @ 4.00GHz

Video card Name: Radeon™ RX 460 Graphics

Installed Memory: 16.00 GB

Racking up this many shaders so early on in my project is crippling me - any tips on things I should or shouldn’t do would be gratefully received. Thanks for taking the time to read this little intro.

it might be a problem with world creator and UE… UE is transforming landscape at the moment and they may not sync, but i’m just guessing… try downloading ‘landscape backgrounds’ from the free UE assets on marketplace and that might give you what you need… i make cinamatics and only need these to ‘flesh out’ my scenes, and build to my hearts content on a smaller level with a good background (smile)…

Thanks northstar

I am going to download the landscape backgrounds to fill the gaps - that sounds like a great idea. Unfortunately I have invested quite a lot of money into world Creator so I have to use it. I think the next step is upgrading my graphics card to match my rendering needs. It is a progression of my digital art, I shan’t be giving up on so I shall be sure to make every penny count in the investment. And not forgetting I simply love it!! It’s one of those things I wished I had begun doing many years ago. But saying that I think now is perhaps the best time to begin due to the amazing programs that are available now such as Megascans / Unreal / Quixel Mixer to name but a few.
