Is it good from a performance perspective to have a separate variation of a landscape material on each tile in a tiled terrain?

Ya i agree it could look kinda weird although i know some people have a base texture that is common to all areas of a terrain and they have variations of the same material with some other textures which they apply to certain tiles. from my testing adding 15 or so textures to one landscape material has a big performance hit. I am exploring other ways to achieve the same texture variations without the performance hit. I know for instance that cryengine performs better with 15 textures
