Highlight Object On Hover, Material vs. PostProcessing

Hey guys, hope you are doing fine
I’m creating a top down game in which I need to highlight the object under the mouse cursor(Enemy, loot and …).
It seems that there are two different approaches towards this: 1) create a material and simply change its parameters when the mouse is hovered over its owner (like this), and 2) use a post processing volume (like this).
note that I’m not looking for something fancy, but the performance is very important to me. So how do you compare these two methods? which one is cheaper? which one would you choose for your project?
