Foliage not working?

I never used the foliage tool, but when i load a mesh into it and start painting nothing happens at all?

I’ve seen youtube videos on it, they just drag and drop and start painting it on, whats wrong?

When i try to sculpt landscape the brushes dosent work eighter

Press ctrl+left mouse button and then paint onto it

there is a stupidly small slot on the destination for the drag and drop of the static mesh in the tab, watch very closely on the video and you can see exactly where to put it, the first one is the hard one after that seems to go about anywhere in the general range, this gave me fits for awhile to say the least. hope this helps
