Disabling distance field for "low quality" setting?

I want to have the option of disabling distance fields for various effects I’m doing in case the player has a low spec computer.
Is that possible? I know I can disable the DFAO etc through console commands, but I would like everything to be just as if I never enabled distance fields in the project settings if players want it that way.

Would I perhaps require two builds of my game? One with the distance field project setting enabled, and one without it?

Any help appreciated.


Is it somehow possible for a end-user to disable distance fields in a game built with them “on” (enabled in the project settings) if he wants better performance?

Is there any hit to performance if enabling the DF in the project settings if no objects are using them?
