Cube Grid - Fixing Single Actor With Multiple Sections/Materials/Parts?

I’ve been using CubeGrid to make my map, and every time I need to edit a wall or object to expand it, it creates a new section on the same actor that requires a new material slot. This is heavily messing with my shaders/occlusion mask and I’ve tried multiple things to fix this/merge the sections. Here’s what the wall in question looks like and how it appears in the outliner (notice 2 material slots and the visual split in the selection):


Trying to use the Edit Materials tool doesn’t work - it acts like they’ve been combined, but there is still visually a hole - which won’t work:

I’ve also gone into Polygroup Edit and tried removing faces, welding sections, and merging. I’ve also tried the Union tool.

If you want to replicate this to maybe help solve it, just create a basic wall with cube grid, accept the creation, and then edit the same wall and add one column of cubes to it. You’ll see that it’s now a new section that requires a new material slot.

Worth noting that this question has been raised before on a separate thread, which I then tried, and it failed.
