Any features found in the background will contribute to a better alignment, the more features the better (newspaper is good). When people use neutral backgrounds it’s often because they are using the turntable or the void method, and deliberately do not want the software to find any features in the background, that way the software will only find tie points on the object itself, any features detected in the background would completely mess up the alignment when using any technique where the object moves relative to it’s surroundings.
