Area Light Source Texture only shows in reflections

Hello, I have a stylized scene and I’m trying to create a glowing crescent moon by adding a source texture (showing a white crescent on a black background) to an area light. When I try this, I can see the crescent moon shape in environment reflections (for example, the reflection of the moon on a water plane), but the actual area light doesn’t show the crescent, it just looks like a blurry white square, no matter what source texture I apply. Are there any other settings etc I need to change?

I’m also open to other options, but I need the moon to cast light beams through the fog, so I can’t just use an emissive material. I thought about just using a bunch of area lights or spotlights arranged together in a crescent, but that’s a last option for now because it looks just a bit too janky.
