Apply a destructible mesh to a sprite/paper 2d actor?

Hi, and thanks for taking the time to read.

I’m making a 2d space shooter and I thought it would be cool to have a similar destructible mesh outcome like that of any other used in 3d, where it essentially breaks apart, and I could add other effects, when some one dies.

However I’m not quite sure where to start for this to work, and it’d be great if some one could help get me started in the right direction, if it’s possible.

No luck yet but I have an idea I’m going to try that I haven’t tested yet.
