Animation desynchonization in a large group of duplicated characters


I have a single character with a single walk animation. I want to use multiple duplicates of this character to create a tustedo-like shield formation, where they walk right next to each others. The problem is that whenever they start walking, their animations are completely in sync, which makes the characters look like robots. Is there a way of making some of the duplicated characters start their walk animations from different frames (for example frame 10 instead of frame 1)?
