animating a window cracking

hey guys I am currently wrapping up a big project and have one effect I am trying to get working that involves a cockpit slowly cracking before bursting open. I have the mesh shattered and animated in Modo and have brought that in as key frame animation. Right now I am imagining a material fade perhaps with a gradient between clean glass and another material that has the crack texture in the normals there before swapping out the meshes. Is this the right way to approach this effect?

I sure wish someone answered this. I need to do the same thing
