    JANUARY GAME JAM: Theme: BACK TO SQUARE ONE

    Theme: Back to Square One

    The results are in! January's winners are -

    THE RULES

    • Make the most amazing game by yourself or with a team (up to 5) around the given theme in Unreal Engine 4.
    • Submit a download link to this thread before midnight on the night of January 18th / morning of Jan 19th including the following:
      • Team Name
      • List of Team Members
      • Name of submission (Please format it with your team's name attached ex. TeamName_GameName)
        After you post your submission, PM me with the email addresses of your team members (up to 5), the name of your team and the name of your project. That makes it easier to get prizes out, so make sure to do it!

    • We will announce the theme on the January 15th stream, when the jam will officially kick-off.
    • A small panel at Epic will judge entries on the following criteria:
      • Unique use of theme
      • Fun factor
      • Overall Visuals

    • Detailed Rules Available Here


    Each submission will receive a code redeemable for one 30 day subscription code per team member (up to 5), and the top 3 submissions will receive three 30 day subscription codes per team member (up to 5) and a t-shirt! We'll be featuring the top submissions on the Twitch stream on January 29th, as well as posting winners to our official blog!

    Sounds great, I'm pretty new to all of this, but hey, you gotta start somewhere right? Really exited about seeing what everyone else is going to make and seeing how different each project is!

    I've only experimented a bit with UE4 because I was stupidly hesitant to leave UDK for a long time. I'm looking forward to this Jam as a reason to really get my hands dirty and figure out more of the asset pipeline and publishing executables side of the engine.

    Nope, you just need at least one subscription ever so you have and can use UE4!

    Is it allowed to use unreleased plugins for ue4 or does that also fall under the 'only new stuff' rule?

    First jam for ue4. Gonna use this to learn how to do spline meshes and some random generation. Looking to come out of this week with something passable, can't wait to see how it goes.

    Question about the rules, because I'm not 100% even after reading through them a few times.
    As a musician, am I ineligible to contribute to a project as a team member unless I'm a subscriber to UE4 as well?

    Description:
    It's a first person platformer set in a surreal space-like environment. You basically just walk around and hop over obstacles, and in the process of doing this, the square-constructed environment becomes lit up. By lighting up more squares, you open up new areas of the game world. But even if you unlock everything, there is no concrete win condition. You cannot escape square one.

    Controls:
    Same as the first person blueprint template
    -WASD: move forward/back/strafe
    -Space: jump
    -Left click: Fire balls of light

    Mechanics:
    -Touch a square (by moving on top of it / next to it) to light it up
    -Hitch a ride on the floating square to quickly traverse the environment

    Potential problems:
    -You might fall through the revolving squares if you land at an awkward angle
    -You really only need the floating square in the second area. In the third part, riding on it can be dangerous. To have it move to the next area, you only need to touch it

    So I've got 4 solid days of work but I still want to participate as the last one was fun.

    Anyone want to toss out some ideas that might fit the theme, wouldn't take a ton of resources or time to complete, and they are not going to use for this jam?

    Would be nice to see if I can get a simple game sparked out while I am at work so I can participate =)

    You could try breaking down the theme into a core concept to use as a seed for an idea. Our team started with the idea of "Repetition and Iteration" for our project. The game will involve doing something which upon completion leads you to circumstances similar to those you started with, with some aspect changed. We worked from there to flesh out an idea and gameplay.

    And... bam that helped. I misread the theme when coming back here during a break and had an idea pop up from that. Really simple and basic for the mechanic so hopefully 1 night to get it working then another night to make it look and play well.

    =)
