Cool [Unpaid] Open Tournament - Open-Sourced Community Project

Vblanco was talking over on the General Discussion forum about bringing the community together to form a community version of Unreal Tournament to life. Before I go into specifics, I'll say now that nobody will be paid from this. The final product won't be charged for, it's a free project (Such as Timesplitters Rewind) that is made to bring the community together and work on something a lot of us all love... Without further ado. THIS IS A NON-PROFIT PROJECT CREATED TO HELP BRING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER.

Like I mentioned in the other thread I'd love to help out with this but I'm still pretty new to UE4. I'm primarily a Web developer. I've done a little work with compiled languages, but nothing major, so I wouldn't consider myself an expert in that area.

If you get a github account set up, I'd be willing to work on a front-page for the project with Github pages. Using Github pages seems like a good option to go down for a website/front-page, since it's free and can be managed.

Nice! You could work on a website for the project or to set up multiplayer games and servers. For now, ill wait a few days to see if there is enough people interested to get a team going and if Epic is fine with this.

You probably should have consulted with Epic before making another thread. This sounds like a good idea, and I'm all for it (Big UT fan) - but Epic still owns the IP and any representation of it has to be authorized by them and them alone.

Sounds like a great idea and I'm interested in contributing in some way. I'm a project manager for software development by day, but new to game development.

My suggestion for a name: Unlimited Tournament. Plays on the original name and fits the open and communal aspect. Maybe add a "4" as well just for fun and to make it UT4.

    Official word from Epic:
"We appreciate your interest in both Unreal Tournament and UE4, but unfortunately we cannot authorize a community driven Unreal Tournament game. But if you want to make a spiritual successor that doesn't use the trademarks or copyrighted content (like characters), definitely go for it."

So we've had a name change!

    Hi,

I'm a programmer/designer mainly from a Unity background but recently I have been looking at UE4. I'm looking to work on something open source which will expand my skills but at the same time help out. I currently work a QA role within the Games industry.

    Cheers,
    Sam

I actually like that name. Perhaps there can be suggestions and then a poll?

Uneding Conflict is awesome! Right, I'll start a Google Site in a little while with everyone's names and roles. If people could PM me or post on here their email addresses and / or Skype ID's - it's going to make things a lot easier to manage.

Edit: Will do a poll for a name on the Google Site when it's up!

This is going to be amazing. I suppose it will be multiplayer only, yes? If this is the case, would there be any use for cinematics? If not then I guess I'm of no use (even though I haven't offered my hand yet).

I'm getting giddy just thinking about the community making a spiritual successor. Good luck! Can't wait

There's the link to the TEMPORARY Google Site. Feel free to vote on a name and message me if you want permissions to add stuff to the site. Hopefully can get a Skype group started up soon. I've listed everyone whose shown interest on the site. If I put stuff incorrectly or you have anything to add, shoot me a message: contact@kitatusstudios.co.uk and I'll sort it out / give you permissions to do the stuff you need.

    Let's do this! :>

I wanted to bring in a "Story mode", I'll code it myself if I have to ;D So you're needed!

This sounds like fun... Only briefly played the UDK version of the UT, but definitely could use the chance to improve my modeling skills.

I am currently working on my own project, so don't expect a whole lot.

Wow! haha, awesome, this is going to be insanely fun if we're able to do this! I am stoked lol. Alright, let's do this! But first things first, we'll need a name. Personally I've voted "Community, Unreal". Gah, alright. I'm going to start messing with the engine to pass this energy around.

Cant seem to vote on that temporary site, might be because I'm on a phone though. I like the name Open Tournament.

Also could we get an IRC channel on freenode once we have a name? I'm not sure if I'll be able to join skype from work, but I might just run it in a networked VM.

I like the Open Tournament or Unending conflict the most on those names. Interesting the amount of people who voted Zero Tolerance.
Now im on university, but when i arrive home, in around 5-6 hours, ill create the skype group, Github repo for the code, and some SVN server for assets. I plan on doing it with the first person template, nothing directly from the ShooterGame demo as it has different things like aim down sights but no alt firing, but i will import the robot so we have a character to start.

Cool, didn't realise that name was in the poll. The reason I mentioned that name is because I thought it would be a neat nostalgia kick for ZZT and show how far technology and Epic has come since then.

I'll probably try and get on skype in the next few hours, so I'll add people then. My skype name is Sonshidesu.

Now that i saw that, Zero Tolerance has to be removed from the poll, as its from another game, and we cant copy game names just like that

It's not directly copied, ZZT was a game sweeney developed a while ago and when asked what it stood for, jokingly remarked Zoo of Zero Tolerance, it was never officially released under that name and I'm sure sweeney wouldn't object to a little nostalgia.

I still think Open Tournament is a better name for the project though, since it emphasizes the open-source aspects.

    Hi

I would be very interested in being a part of the project, I'm primarily an Environment Artist/Mapper, I have experience in UDK and having been using UE4 since it's release, in fact I have some of my art work already in UE4.

Please feel free to check out my portfolio, http://danielsquire.wix.com/portfolio.

    Thanks
    Dan

P.S If any of the original maps get remade, can I call dibs on DM-Morpheus, my favorite map in UT.

    Coder - reporting for duty.

The name shouldn't be in relation to any trademark. ZZT might be a registred trademark, as well as the full name.

As names can change rapidly, I would suggest a more generic working title for this project. And I like a short name which pronunciation sounds nice. Here are some of my suggestions:

    Project TeaParty
(Project TP; PTP; that T comes from Tournament, Party is a group of poeple with the same interests, and also tea party has some related meanings)

    ProTo4
(That name is the abbreviation of Pro Tournament 4 and also suggests that this is a Prototype of a spirtual successor of UT in UE4)

    ...
I have more but I don't like them that much.

  28. #28
    Hmm Unreal Tournament, Un T.

    UnTour?
    UnTethered?
    UnTamed?

    UnT Em?

    UnsToppable?

    UlTra Kill?

    Ok I'll stop.

I'll just leave a link to my portfolio http://www.thebladeroden.com

I admit I've been kicking around the idea of remaking a classic UT99 map like Barricade just to get back into my old mapping roots. If it turns out good, I'd be more than willing to contribute it.

I didn't see an "Ultra Tournament" in the list yet.

Awesome to see the energy on this. Down the road, I could see myself making maps for this.
