Ryzen over i7?

Hi all, I’m spec’ing out a new (ue4) dev box and it’s been suggested I get a Ryzen r5 instead of an i7. What’s the general consensus of the i series vs. the new ryzens?

Here’s the basic specs of what I’m looking at, but it’s been suggested that an R5 would have more cores/threads and would handle the compiling, editor launching faster. I’m a bit AMD shy, since last time I went AMD the i-series came out shortly after and, well, you know…

Here’s the only real benchmarking I’ve seen with Ryzen and UE4. They only looked at Ryzen 7, but it’s enough to draw results from.

If your may concern is UE4 performance, Ryzen might not be a good option.

If you are considering an i7 from intel, why “comparing” with a R5 and not a R7 1700, since its R7 vs i7, R5 vs i5, etc? With an R7 you get double the cores of your i7 processor which will speed up compiling, shader compiling, lighting builds up quite nicely.

For all the fun people saying that Ryzen is “bad” for gaming: Its not bad, its around 5% behind the 7700k in cpu-bottlenecked scenarios. I would call that not bad but good, with just the 7700k being a bit better.

IF you are opting for a R7, be sure to check RAM that is able to go to 3200 on the AMD chipset, since this will boost cpu performance(!) by around 10% as opposed to 2400Ghz RAM.

Ryzen is surprisingly a lot slower than i7 for compiling and maybe a little faster for light building.

Hmm, thats interesting. A full build for 4.16 took me 22,5 minutes on my stock 1700:

Which is not really that much slower then the i7 results. I will probably do a short test later with clocking it to 3.7 and see what the times are then.
