A solution for steam direct

If we can create our on market on unreal then it will be more easy for indie games using this engine to shine!!! then unreal can charge even more than his 5%(like steam or less) and we will be happy as well!!! community will be bigger and more money will be here as well!! Paragon , the new unreal tournament and other games are making a lot of noise out there and this can help to atrack players and build a market place for us!!! if we join our forces and create games on unreal market place then we can attract a lot of consumers to start using unreal desktop launcher and buying games!!!

Epic Games will become a publisher / portal someday;
But that is not in this decade and maybe not even in the next one.

Epic can easily do this now and it does not have to take a decade, that’s crazy talk.
Imagine how easy it would be to publish a game. A one button submission with a status for pending/pass go/marketplace. Could take just under a week to go from submission to marketplace.
A small fee of $25-30 would be apply to offset server cost/maintenance expenses.

People are all ready using this with Unreal Tournament and they are not even developing games. The tab between marketplace and academia would just read Games.

The launcher already has this mechanism in place. When you buy a plugin it get stored in the launcher. Adding one more tab in the launcher under Marketplace (Games) would be the vault or the steam equivalent.

When I submit a plugin, Epic takes months to be able to add it to the Marketplace;
Plugins are small code. Games are much bigger.

No, Epic cannot do that at the moment, they have no resources to build a game portal unless they gamble big fundings to hire a lot more people just for that.

Epic Games is not as big as Apple for sure BUT Valve wasn’t as big as it is now either before Steam being a huge financial success.
If Epic Games managers will risk some of their money to do what Valve did then they might with a good production plan launch their own game portal in 18/24 months so maybe by 2019 … but if they don’t want to then it just will never happen.

MS is trying and is not succeeding. What makes you think Epic could?

Just because one fail does not mean Epic can’t. Other companies like to be a jack of all and have their hands all over the place. That’s why they are not doing so good. You have to know your audience well and be dedicated to the business.
Epic will do better than Steam in the long run, because Epic is totally dedicated to quality and once the word gets out is like wildfire. I think this is the perfect time to venture and expand the company.
Steam does not have curators that review what gets in the store. The greenlight was a nice idea, but it can easily be manipulated and bought. Same goes for pay per submission, but with Epic they will have reviewers and if is junk then it gets toss.
Their is only one way to guarantee quality content and that is with reviewers and perhaps a community approved as well.

Go Epic…

Bro, MS is not a game company, they try to get a piece of the cake, but thats not his core, since they already have a solid community (xbox) they just trying to take back pc gaming.

Tencent is just share holder; they do nothing outside their own direct business in China.

Yeah would be if they’d get involved and push their portal outside of China.
But they want nothing to do with non-commercial game developers either.

  • Tencent has its own Steam-like game store, but it’s for chinese consumers only *

Do you just compare MS with Epic ? Thanks for the laugh. You are a funny guy :smiley:

You forgot something important, the vast majority of gamers are not developers. In other words, EPIC can’t become another Steam just like that.

I’m comparing the amount of money in their pockets.

I hope Epic Games will become a “high-quality indie games publisher” on steam. Its will solve all our problems, and add a lot new developers to UE engine.

I think M$ history shows that having a ton of money is not as helpful as one may assume. Bottom line is that Steam can do this, Apple does this with owning a portion of the mobile market. Steam own almost the entire pc market which is as big as the entire mobile market, game wise. So there is zero excuse for Valve.

M$ is a company of never ending failure the past at least two decades , Vista and Windows Mobile being failures of epic proportion, so it should never under any circumstances being used as an example to follow or reference.

Also Epic does exercise tight control on the quality of assets placed on marketplace, so all this is a moot point. Epic can have a game market if they so wish, I think they do not bother not because they cannot do it but because they will have to compete with behemoths like Google, Apple and Valve. It wont be easy not to manage the market but actually convince people to convert to an Epic marketplace for games.
