Can't compile. Unknown suffix "XXX", UE4Editor-Core_XXX.dll" is not in a XXX folder.. etc.

    Hi,

I've always thought the error messages in UBT could use some love but this is getting ridiculous. Iteration is slow as it is but this is totally killing my productivity. Consider the following errors:
Click image for larger version Name:	20200322-12_52_15Clipboard.png Views:	0 Size:	24.8 KB ID:	1735561
What on earth am I supposed to do? What does it even mean? This seems to show up instead of any errors.

Any ideas what I can do to rectify this? I'm on Visual Studio 2019. I can't recall if this happened back in 2017 but I don't think so.

    Hey Stefan,

One of our team members ran into the same issue. That puzzled me for good as well. Have you discovered a way to work around it?

    Thanks,
    Roman

      Hi bstone,

Yeah, this is a bug in UBT. Only shows up when you have other errors, which are masked by this one.
In my case this only happens when I try to build UE4, not the game project (which builds UE4 anyway). So the workaround for me is to right click the Game project in Visual Studio, and click "Build". Doing the same on UE4 results in the error mentioned.

Hopefully this is also the case on your end! Fingers crossed..
