Is there a way to enable development build features in a shipping build?

I really need the DrawDebug*** functions to work for my plugin.
I'm pretty sure it used to work about 1 or 2 versions ago in a shipping build to, but now I get no indication on the geometry I create and what I select in a shipping build.
