    Server building in UE4 is a joke

    This one is for the savvy users...

    Unreal Engine 4 seems to have trouble tackling the simplest of tasks: building the dedicated server.
    This issue has become a "brick wall" and is stopping us from developing our multiplayer game.

    The issue is a follows:
    When I build and start a dedicated server for my game, I get this error:


    If I try to connect after clicking "OK" to the previous message, I get this:


    Could someone blessed with the gift of knowledge kindly inform me what the hell is going on?

    Atm its not possible with prebuild version of ue4. You need a self compiled engine version using the git sources. Maybe its also required that your project is c++ based.

        I think (not sure) the project only has to be c++ based, this means that you can do everything you want in blueprints as long as you started with a c++ project. Also, he said maybe, so maybe it's enough to just use the compiled engine source with a BP-only project. why don't you give it a try?

              yeah as Thommie sad just start with a c++ project and do everything with blueprint... it might(not tested) be also possible to add code to your blueprintproject and complie it.
              however all you need to do is adding a custom server buildscript and compile your project with any "* Server" configuration.

              Edit1: To deploy it I recommend to use the "Game Launcher". Also be sure to cook the content for your server before you pack/deploy it.

              Edit2: Also one importend step is to generate new project file after you add your Server.Target.cs

                Ok, here's the cause of the issue:

                v4.4.3 appears to be bugged and cannot build, but v4.5 works just fine. We managed to properly build our dedicated server on 4.5.

                Now another question arises...

                How do you build the client without the server, in such a way that a player cannot open a listen server? We also need this feature for our game.

                  Compile your project again with just "debug","development" or "shipping" configuration. Now you should be able to pack the client using the NoEditor Target and the server as before. Just be sure to cook the content before. I thing the "* Server" config is only required just after you add your target.cs. After that a general config like "debug" should be work to deploy server and client.

                    Yes, but that would build the client and server code together. We have to prevent people creating pirate retro-servers on our game, so we're looking to seperate the two (server and client).

                        I compiled the Client using UE4Client.Target.cs in Engine\Source Folder, but if I type "open Map?listen" in the console, I can open a Listen Server. Is there a way to disable this?
