Adding weapons without making a completely new sprite animation for a 2D game?

i would like to know if there is a way to add a different spite over an existing sprite animation? the picture i added is an example of what i would like to try to do, i would like to have many weapons but having to redo every animation with the weapon in hand seems extremely ineffective. being able to just have some sort of way to switch them according to what happens in game sounds optimal. im new so if anyone has any tips or existing information on this kind of topic please let me know, thank you!

If I had to guess, create a socket for hand and for the gun and line them up in game. Make the gun a lower layer so the hand can block it.
Check out my itch.io page, I'm really excited about it.
