Blueprint Tutorial Series!

Hey Developers!
I've been using UE4 since its launch, learning a lot along the way. I've used blueprints exclusively, and have gotten pretty good with it. I've learned a lot from tutorials posted by community members here, and wanted to create a tutorial series as a way of saying thanks and giving back to the community! I'll also be doing one-shot tutorials based on reasonable request, so feel free to post those as well.

I couldn't edit the poll, but RPG got the most votes, so I'll be going with that! If there are certain genre-specific features you want a tutorial for, either post it in this thread or PM me.

As I create and upload tutorials, I'll edit this original post and the next two for good measure.

Part 1: Camera System

Part 2: Player Interaction

Here are some of my older tutorials: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqsz...cDDiq6q-s9-BUL

Hey ascendancy .

I'm also a pure blueprint user. I am able to code in C++, but I refuse to use it. I want to promote and push the blueprint feature, because I think this system will be great in the future. I'm glad that you want to create a blueprint series. Although I have a lot of experience in knowledge in terms of blueprints and don't need help with them, others might find your tutorials very useful. You maybe have seen some of my posts, where I also post mostly a video to make a quick tutorial for a user problem. So cool to see more user requested tutorial options .

I think you even hit the same brickwall as I did. I am pretty busy, but I also would really make some tutorials, but I can't for the life of me decide, what it should be .

Haha it is difficult! I'm hoping this will show where there is less documentation and discussion, and hopefully I can fill in those gaps.

What kind of games do you exactly imagine under these genre labels?
If you do a shooter, would it be an FPS? Would it have an inventory? Would it have weapon switching? Any advanced movement like vaulting?
Would the RPG be 3rd-person point and click?
And is the sidescroller a platformer or something else?

Details are important, to know which aspects you'll actually showcase.

Also, your post reminded me that I was planning to do a tutorial or two myself, a while ago. It would be text-based, though. Thanks for that.
(My focus was doing a 2D grid Diablo-style inventory tutorial, as it took me ages to figure out and the internet had absolutely no useful help for me. Yes, a few people posted tips on how to do it, but they did it in a way that is so inefficient and mind-boggingly tedious that I wonder if they started out as Java developers. My approach is actually procedural, but I still have a few minor bugs that I haven't bothered to fix yet.)

What I find gives people the most frustration is communicating between Blueprints, Interfaces and Player Characters (custom events, BP Interfaces, casting, etc)... I good concise tutorial with Real World examples (not theories) would, I think, be very well received. IE: When I as a player click the "I" button, I want the ball to move up. WHen the ball reaches 10 centimeters, I want it to bring up a UMG interface. Then on that interface, I want to click a button, and the ball goes sides ways. When that ball 'touches' a cube, the cube brings up a message on my screen - as a simple example.

Also how to send variables back and forth is always challenging. Each time I do the above, a variable gets increased. At certain numbers, (5, 10, 15) etc, the color of the ball changes, the size of the cube changes, etc showing communication between what the player is doing, and how it is affecting other items including UMGs.

It seems rather simple to communicate from the player character to a Blueprint Actor in the scene... but communicating between two Actors or between an actor and a UMG is a bit more complex for beginners.
Now available on the UE Marketplace: Inventory Examine Interface -- and -- Fifty Knobs and Dials -- and -- Thirty Buttons Pack -- and --Kitchen and Bath Handles for Arch Vis -- and -- Chat Bot A.I. Simulator

I modified the original post to be more explanatory, thanks!

CreativeVilla I agree, this is something I struggled with at first, but I've come to use it quite a bit. I plan on using interfaces and communications in my tutorials, and may do some one shot examples as well, thanks for your input!

hi, RPG vote here !
I appreciate any tutorials, but i hope you will make some little advanced tutorials... or if you at least share some advanced tips...
For example explaining where to use which class and why... I can script almost everything, but i found my gaps for example where to use buffs (whether in character or actor component or object/actor?)

Feel free to pm me, and explain a bit further what you're talking about! I do very advanced blueprint systems in my personal projects, so I'm up for a challenge!

Whichever path you take, please include sample projects using free assets.

What are the BEST Unreal Tutorials / Docs? There are none tbh... Here's why
Instead its better to just take projects apart (see the free 'creators' listed here)

Here's part 1, which shows how to make a very smooth and polished camera system, allowing free look, over the shoulder, and true first person! Let me know what you guys think! I'll edit the first post to show it as well.
