    "Brick f*cking Master!"

    You may be thinking:
    'A wall. how lame.'
    and you're right.

however, this wall concluded a whole day of research on how to do a wall for VR...

Normal maps look like flat wallpaper in 3D, so I tried bump mapping, iterative parallax mapping... I even tried parallax occlusion materials and nothing looked cool in the Rift.
so this is actually a (quite heavy) tessellation shader.
for now it works fine performance-wise and looks great in 3D, but 'might' have to re-evaluate once the level is done and the characters are in there.. depending on how it runs.
    let's see

Are you sure it's not the normal map you're using that's giving you the 'wallpaper' effect? If you're generating a normal map from that brick photo, without some manually drawn masks, it won't identify the bricks very well.

Seems to be a general problem in VR that normal maps look bad. It's not surprising really when you think about it. A shader trick that gives flat surfaces some fake depth can work on a flat monitor but as soon as you add actual 3D vision to the mix the eye perceives that there isn't any real depth. Hence the wallpaper effect.

If VR takes off I think the normal map will die at some point. Maybe someone will find a new way to trick the eye somehow.

          hey guys

had a week off from work and made quite a bit of progress; however, now it's back to my dayjob so I thought I'd post a first little video of where the level is currently at.
          work in progress of course.
there's two videos actually, one with Rift Dk2 and one with standard gameplay.
          thanks for watching!

Has a great feel of realism (right down to the hand print detail on the kitchen counter) that is going to make for a great horror game!

                        ----------

sorry I haven't updated in a while. been doing lots and lots of R&D, and simultaneously continued texturing and modeling stuff for the first level aaaand at the same time I started working on one of the characters. x_x
all is work in progress still, of course.
                        especially the girl's dress, urgh.
I did some tests with APEX with it and it looks pretty cool, although I have yet to find a good way for really accurate collision. didn't get a chance to spend a whole lot of time on research yet.

                        anyways.. it's coming along... slowly..
                        talk soon!

phew.. spent the last month doing R&D for the character; didn't quite realize what a major undertaking it was gonna be x) anyway, now she's modeled, sculpted, textured and rigged and pretty much ready to go.
oh and for some story related reasons I went away from the idea of her being a child; she's more like a teenager now .. approx ~~17
                              some UE4 in-editor screenshots/clips to follow soon.
                              work in progress.
